Fast cars. Cocky hotshots. A grizzled mentor. Flagrant sexual harassment. Mellow Yellow. The only things this manly, man’s-man movie needs are Tim “the Tool Man” Taylor grunts and a literal pissing match (though there are plenty of figurative ones).
Tom Cruise is Cole Trickle, a Racing God who doesn’t know anything about cars. Nicole Kidman is playing an actual Australian, Robert Duvall speaks only in “stock-car-is-life” metaphors, and Cary Elwes is playing a dick, as per usual.
It’s NASCAR meets “Top Gun” with a dollop of cocaine in 1990’s “Days of Thunder,” directed by Tony Scott. “Let me out of the CAHR, Cole!”
